Imbituba Port Authority wrapped up January with excellent outcomes, maintaining impressive figures in port operations. Throughout the month, the port registered approximately 612,000 tonnes in cargo throughput, marking a 19% growth compared to the same period last year.
In January, 25 vessels docked, at an average of 24.5 thousand tonnes per ship, an indication of increased volumes per operation. Exports continue to dominate operations at the port, with the largest volumes consisting of petroleum coke, bituminous coal, salt, soybeans, cornmeal, soybean meal, and containers.
“The port is seizing recognition as a competitive logistical alternative nationally. It was blessed with favorable weather conditions and pent-up demand that contributed to a positive January throughput,” remarked Urbano Lopes de Sousa Netto, CEO of SCPAR Imbituba Port.
In 2024, exports (51.5% of the total) were accompanied by a 36.2% year-on-year increase in tonnage sent abroad compared to January 2023. Conversely, imports accounted for 40% of operations, marking a 6% rise from the same period last year.
Domestic coastal shipping represented 8.5% of the port’s throughput in January, reflecting a 2.8% decrease in cargo tonnage compared to the same month last year.
The bulk solids segment accounted for the majority of cargo transported in January (89%). Petroleum coke, bituminous coal, corn and soybean meal, containers, salt, corn, and soybeans were the top-ranked cargoes. Shipments also included 574 tons of components for a Ceará-based wind energy project.
According to Federal Government data, import and export operations in Imbituba totaled over $195 million in the first month of 2024.
In the coming year, port activities are expected to grow by 5%, with an 8 million tonne cargo throughput. As part of SCPar Imbituba Port’s Strategic Plan, the Port Authority has set aside more than $96 million for infrastructure, equipment, and information technology services, with an emphasis on improving efficiency and strengthening port-city relationships.
