Port of Imbituba Plans BRL 50 Million in Investments by End of 2024

Aware of the growth of the port sector and associated economic advancements, Imbituba Port has set a target goal of investing R$ 50 million in construction projects by the end of 2024. Several projects are already underway, while others are in the bidding process.
The largest project to date is the reconstruction of Pier 3, involving reinforcement, restoration, and expansion of the platform, with an estimated investment of R$ 92 million. This represents the most significant investment in the history of SCPAR Porto de Imbituba and is a critical step toward enhancing the port’s operating capacity in the coming years, allowing it to accommodate larger vessels and equipment.
Pier 3, built roughly 40 years ago, currently holds a share of around 32% of the port’s cargo throughput. The reinforcement will enable the installation of a shiploader (an automated cargo loading and unloading system), which will boost productivity. The upgrades include concrete repairs, rigid pavement installation in part of the back area, structural reinforcement of the support piles, widening the berth by approximately 2.5 meters, drainage improvements, and the construction of two mooring dolphins. These enhancements will allow the port to receive larger vessels, extending the current 200-meter LOA (Length Overall) limit to ships up to 270 meters.

“Governor Jorginho Mello has focused on port infrastructure to improve logistics in Santa Catarina. The improvements we are working on are essential for Porto de Imbituba to continue its upward trajectory in port logistics, and they encompass simultaneous efforts in infrastructure, access, area optimization, process automation, and commercial management,” said Urbano Lopes de Sousa Netto, CEO of SCPAR Porto de Imbituba. He added, “Our goal is to raise the port’s operational efficiency in cargo handling, enhance sustainability in daily interactions with the city, and maintain minimal wait times for docking.”
After completing the Pier 3 renovations, new investments will be pursued through private sector partnerships and leasing agreements. These will likely include connecting existing grain warehouses with conveyor belts to Berth 3, along with a new shiploader to triple the berth’s operational productivity, further positioning Porto de Imbituba as a key player in the vegetable bulk market.
Additional investments are planned for dredging and rock removal at Berth 1, along with the construction of a dolphin for Berth 2, a project already secured by the port. These efforts will extend the docking line between Piers 1 and 2 from the current 660 meters to 710 meters, allowing the port to handle up to three ships simultaneously, thus increasing its operational capacity.
Scheduled for 2024, a major and strategic step in Imbituba’s digital transformation will be the implementation of a new data center. The project will enhance security, control, data processing, storage capacity, and monitoring for the Port Authority.
The new data center marks a milestone for the Port Authority, making Imbituba the first Brazilian port with a Tier 3 data center, featuring redundant power circuits, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, air conditioning, optical network redundancy, and advanced fire detection and suppression systems.
Aligned with the sustainable exploitation of port activities, a solar energy generation system is being installed. Construction began in the second half of 2023, with completion expected by the end of 2024. Around 830 square meters of the administration building roofs are being outfitted for solar energy generation, leveraging the region’s high solar exposure. The system is estimated to supply 15% of the port’s current electricity consumption.
In addition to enhancing the reliability of the port’s electrical system, this project diversifies the port’s energy matrix, providing better service conditions for users and embedding sustainability into port operations.
