Port of Imbituba reaches record with over 830 K in throughput

The Port of Imbituba concluded March on a high note, celebrating a new throughput high with the handling of 834,151 thousand tonnes of cargo. This marks an 18% increase compared to the same period in 2023 (710,346 thousand tonnes) and a 9% rise compared to April last year (767,772 thousand tons), which held the previous cargo handling record. In March, the port witnessed 26 dockings, averaging 32 thousand tons per anchored ship.

Exports remained the leading category of products that passed through the port, totaling over 541.9 thousand tonnes, an increase of more than 11% compared to February (488.2 thousand tonnes). The highest volumes of wheat, soybean meal, corn, containers, petroleum coke, and salt were among the shipments.

“Santa Catarina is a state that boasts relentless production, contributing significantly to global markets. We require infrastructure that can match this level of productivity. That’s why we’re heavily investing in the logistics sector. Upon assuming office, I established the Department of Ports, Airports, and Railways, recognizing the state’s needs and the potential to enhance our competitiveness,” Governor Jorginho Mello emphasized.

Beto Martins, the Secretary of Ports, Airports, and Railways (SPAF), noted that the numbers continue to reflect the port’s heightened trajectory. “The positive trend, coupled with effective port management, has yielded these impressive results, bolstering Santa Catarina’s economy,” Martins stated.

“The Port of Imbituba is solidifying its position as a competitive and efficient logistics hub, benefitting from favorable natural conditions and its strategic location near BR-101,” underscored Urbano Lopes de Sousa Netto, CEO of SCPAR Port of Imbituba.

Director of Infrastructure and Operations at the port, José João Tavares, attributed the increase in cargo movement to significant boosts in volumes of wheat, soybean meal, corn, containers, petroleum coke, and salt.

“This achievement marks a significant milestone for the Port of Imbituba. It reflects the collective efforts that have contributed to the port’s performance and the prosperity of Imbituba city,” affirmed Cássia Reis, manager of the Port Operations Department at SCPAR Port of Imbituba.

In 2024, exports dominated the cargo movement, accounting for 60% of the total, with a notable 42.4% surge in tonnage sent abroad compared to the previous year. Imports accounted for 30.4% of operations, while coastal shipping represented approximately 11% of the port’s activity in March, showing a 21.7% increase in cargo tonnage compared to the same period last year.

Key cargoes transported in March included bulk solids, comprising 80% of the total, with wheat, soybean meal, corn, containers, petroleum coke, and salt leading the way. Noteworthy was the shipment of 385 tons of components for a wind energy generation project underway in Ceará.

Federal Government data revealed that import and export operations in Imbituba totaled approximately $470 million between January and March 2024.

Looking ahead, the Port Authority anticipates an increase of over 8.5 million tons in cargo throughput for 2024. As part of the Strategic Planning of SCPar Porto de Imbituba, investments of approximately $100 million are earmarked for infrastructure and technologies, aiming to enhance synergy and effectiveness in the port-city relationship.
