On January 16, a cargo of 89,500 tons of iron ore left the Port of Imbituba heading to China. It was the largest dry bulk operation ever carried out at the port in the southern part of Santa Catarina state. Which is also one of the largest in southern Brazil. The ship was the Niki, a freighter with Liberian flag, measuring 253 meters long and 40 meters wide.
According to Jamazi Alfredo Ziegler, CEO of SCPAR Porto de Imbituba, the port authority, characteristics such as the easy access to the port, its wide turning basin and the depth in the berths have contributed to receiving and sending ships with greater cargo capacity. “In addition, the operational flexibility to move different loads and the low waiting time for docking are some of the port’s excellent differentials in meeting market needs. These factors provide greater efficiency and a reduction in logistical costs ”, he says.
The Niki left the port with a draft of 13.5 meters. Until then, the largest shipment made at the site was 71,500 tons. It was an operation to export corn to Iran in March 2019. Since it was delegated to the Government of the State of Santa Catarina, the port has registered an accumulated growth of 180% in cargo handling.
The shipment concluded this Thursday was carried out by the operator Imbituba Logística Portuária (ILP), with two MHC cranes. The operation took place between January 10th and 16th. Friendship managed the ship.
