Week 202517

The Port of Itajaí has completed its first 100 days under the Federal Government’s management following the federalization process. According to Superintendent João Paulo Tavares Bastos, the initial results have exceeded expectations, with significant highlights including a sharp increase in revenue, the return of tax collection to the municipality, and the appreciation of port workers.

Now linked to the Santos Port Authority, which is part of the Ministry of Ports and Airports, the Port of Itajaí recorded R$50 million in revenue during the period—a 125% increase compared to the same quarter last year.

“Today, the Port of Itajaí is strong and booming, with cargo ships arriving constantly. It means an improvement in the city’s economy. We also had the best cruise season in history. It’s clear that federalization has been positive, contrary to what the fake news claimed,” said the superintendent.

Another direct impact was the return of ISS (Service Tax) collection to the municipality, totaling R$ 900,000 in just 100 days. This amount represents an important boost to the city’s budget, allowing investment in healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Stability and Appreciation of Workers

Federalization also ensured the preservation of jobs and salaries for 74 permanent staff members who were previously under the local government’s responsibility. The R$2 million monthly payroll is now funded by the federal government through the Santos Port Authority.

In addition, after 29 years, a new hiring process was announced to bring in 122 casual port workers in partnership with the Labor Management Body (OGMO). The call for applications is expected to be published in May.

“We’ve reestablished our relationship with the workers, holding weekly meetings to hear their concerns. This active listening is essential for more humane and efficient management,” João Paulo emphasized.

The new administration has also taken responsibility for settling a R$48 million dredging debt and maintaining the port’s draft, which is essential for its operations. The dredging work for the access channel is underway, and a concession notice is expected to be published later this year.

Among future projects is constructing a tourist pier next to Marejada, with funding guaranteed by the Federal Government. The goal is to improve cruise reception infrastructure and increase tourist traffic.

Another significant step was the creation of a national commission to fast-track the legislative process to establish Docas de Itajaí. This was followed by a specific ordinance to oversee the removal of the wreck of the Pallas ship, which had been submerged at Pontal da Barra for over 120 years. The project, valued at R$400,000, is essential for accommodating larger vessels and enhancing the port’s competitiveness.

With reinstated tax payments to the municipality, part of the funds can now be allocated to cultural projects through the Cultural Incentive Law (LIC), managed by the Municipal Council for Cultural Policies.
