Port of Itajaí: former governor receives invitation to step up as terminal head

Lawyer Fábio da Veiga is poised to step down as the superintendent of the Port of Itajaí. His potential successor is a former governor of Santa Catarina, Eduardo Pinho Moreira, who received an invitation from the current mayor, Volnei Morastoni, on the 27th, to assume the position.
Although the reason for the change is unconfirmed, the Itajaí Communications Secretariat stated that Fábio da Veiga had been requesting to leave his post due to personal reasons for several months. He recently lost his father to dengue fever and, in 2022, his brother passed away from a heart attack.
Giovani Testoni, the chief of staff at the city hall, stated that Pinho Moreira committed to meeting with the family, considering the invitation, and providing a response regarding the superintendence of the Port of Itajaí by next week. Fábio da Veiga is expected to remain on the team in a yet-to-be-announced role.
Pinho Moreira, a member of the same party as Mayor Volnei Morastoni, is a prominent figure in Santa Catarina politics. He served as governor of the state for two terms: from 2006 to 2018, succeeding as governor from the position of deputy.
Before his tenure as governor, Pinho Moreira was the mayor of Criciúma from 1993 to 1997 and a federal deputy in the early 1990s. Within Santa Catarina, he also held positions such as president of Celesc and head of the Civil House.
Despite the interim appointment being decided, the Port of Itajaí remains without regular activity. With container movements stalled for over a year, the port recently secured a management company, Mada Araújo, until the final auction scheduled for 2025. However, operations are yet to commence.
Efforts are underway to expedite the resumption of operations, contingent upon various factors. While the terminal can receive ships, some occasional repairs are needed for optimal functionality, prompting the company to seek necessary equipment.
Last month, a coalition of stakeholders, including representatives from the business community, labor unions, and the government, issued a manifesto urging action to address the challenges facing the port.
Pinho Moreira’s potential appointment as superintendent of the Port of Itajaí aligns with his political influence and rapport with the current mayor, which could prove advantageous in the final bidding process, where prospective candidates have already emerged.
