Port of Itajaí handles cellulose pulp cargo

The first yearly boarding operation with cellulose pulp was completed on the morning of April 8, at 6:40 a.m., at berth 04 of the Port of Itaja public pier. The cargo was put onto the TIAN LE, a Chinese-flagged freighter. On March 31, the ship, 189.99 meters long and 28.5 meters broad, docked to begin operations.

According to the operations department of the Superintendence of the Port of Itajaí, the vessel originating from Punta Pereyra (Uruguay) reported a volume of 14,000 tonnes of Pulp Coils. Once it undocks, the ship will set sail to FLUSHING (VLISSINGEN) / NETHERLANDS.

Cellulose pulp can be transported either in bales or in coils. As they are extremely fragile products, the international transportation of pulp and paper requires specific equipment and special care to protect the loads and prevent them from being mainly wet or damaged.

The first pulp operation at the Port of Itajaí took place in August 2019 through the ship SAGA FANTASY with 6,314 tonnes of pulp coils.

“Being able to enter a new market, especially with such a ‘clean’ and easy to operate cargo such as cellulose pulp, in a time of many uncertainties, is very important and brings us new perspectives and challenges we have to face to make it a regular occurrence. Both the public power and the private initiative worked hard to make this operation possible,” highlights Ricardo Amorim, the director of operation inspections and intelligence coordinator.

As with all other cargoes, handling cellulose pulp requires extreme care, especially concerning weather conditions, as humidity compromises the quality of the product.
