Week 202440

JBS Terminais commenced operations in the container area of the Port of Itajaí under its lease on Friday (October 11). The arrival of the Maersk Lamanai, registered under the Hong Kong flag, marks the resumption of activities in the area, which had been inactive since December 2022, when the concession held by APM Terminals ended.

The vessel, chartered by Seara, part of the JBS Group, loaded refrigerated cargo before departing for the Port of Santos.

This revival of container operations at the port was made possible through a $30 million investment by JBS in the customs clearance of the area leased from the Federal Revenue Service. JBS Terminais plans to receive five regular shipping lines, aiming for a throughput of 58,000 TEUs per month—exceeding the contractual goal of 44,000 TEUs.

“We are beginning a new cycle of development, not just for our company but for the entire Itajaí region,” stated Aristides Russi Junior, executive director of JBS Terminais.

Originally awarded to Mada Araújo, the temporary concession for the area was transferred to JBS Terminais earlier this year. During the two years of transitional leasing, the federal government plans to issue a definitive tender for leasing the four berths of the Port of Itajaí to the private sector. The final lease will span 35 years while the Public and Municipal Port Authority remains in place.

JBS Ship Dockings at the Public Port

Since July 7, several ships operated by JBS Terminais have docked at the public port for loading and unloading operations. In a collaborative effort with SC PORTOS, the public area operator, seven vessels have docked, showing the importance of joint efforts for port operations. The STAR LYSEFJORD arrived in July to offload significantly large cargo, while the CMA CGM PLATON docked at the end of the same month for loading operations. In September, the CHIPOL CHANGAN and the MSC KALAMATA also operated at the port with important shipments. Subsequently, the MAERSK LOTA continued export operations, followed by the MSC ILLINOIS, which recorded one of the largest operations levels during this period, including removals in addition to container loading.

In early October, the NC BRUMA conducted a smaller loading operation, and today, the MAERSK LAMANAI completed additional export activities.
