The Port of Itajaí’s Superintendence has received a recommendation for ISO 14001 certification after successfully completing the necessary international procedure. This recommendation confirms that the Superintendence complies with certification standards, qualifying the port to recertify its environmental management system according to ISO 14001.
The Companhia da Estratégia company conducted an internal audit on December 12 and 15. Specializing in business consulting, auditing, and training related to management and international standardization norms, Companhia da Estratégia played a crucial preparatory role for the external audit conducted in January 2024.
Turv Nord Brasil conducted the external recertification audit on January 8 and 9, recommending the Environmental Management System of the Port of Itajaí for ISO 14001 Certification. It is worth noting that the Port Authority received the ISO 14001 certification for the first time in 2021.
Fábio da Veiga, the Superintendent of the Port of Itajaí, commented on the need for management commitment to achieving sustainable development. “Even in the face of challenges and unstable port activity, the Port Authority achieved second place in the Environmental Performance Index of ANTAQ. This accomplishment highlights our resilience and commitment to environmental management, reflecting the dedication of the port team,” says Fábio.
The ISO 14001 certification demonstrates the Port Authority’s concern for managing environmental impacts resulting from its activities, confirming the implementation of an Environmental Management System in the organization. ISO 14001 was developed to assist companies and institutions in integrating environmental responsibilities into their internal processes, balancing this commitment with the continuous pursuit of economic development.
“We faced the challenge of obtaining ISO certification for the first time in 2021, overcoming the adversities of an atypical year marked by the Covid-19 pandemic. We maintained the certification in the two subsequent years, and in 2024, we once again certified our environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001 through a new audit. This achievement was only possible due to the collaboration and commitment of the entire port community in this process,” declares Médelin Pitrez dos Santos, Coordinator of Environment, Occupational Safety, and Sustainability at the Port of Itajaí.
