The Port of Itajaí’s statistics report for February 2020, points to 22% growth in container handling at the public berth and APM Terminals. A total of 44,188 TEU were handled, compared with 36,147 TEU in February 2019. At the Itajaí Port Complex as a whole, 107,130 TEU was handled, representing a 16% growth in the same period comparison.
Heder Cassiano Moritz, General Director of Operations and Logistics Itajaí commented that “movement registered in this first two months was very expressive because generally at the beginning of the year we have a market retraction and this year it was the opposite. We saw a 23% growth in the handling of containerized cargo in public berths (public wharf and APM Terminals), which is very significant. Forecasts for March are also positive despite the impact of the coronavirus.”
A total of 2.2 million tons were handled at the entire complex in the first two months, a 10% increase over year-ago levels. The Portonave terminal handled 1.3 million tons during the same period, up 5% compared to the previous year. Regarding containerized cargo, 625,295 tons and 62,942 TEUs were handled in February.
Vessel moorings also registered growth during this period. In February, 85 vessels moored at the Port Complex of Itajaí, 41 in public berths and APM Terminals, and 44 in Private Use Terminals (TUPs). More specifically: 40 at Portonave, two at Teporti, one at Polly Terminals and one at Barra do Rio. The Braskarne terminal did not register any calls in February. February 2019 registered 80 vessels moored throughout the complex.
Itajaí’s share of trade makes up 59.5% of Santa Catarina’s total, and 3.9% of total Brazilian trade. Exports represent 61% of all cargo handled, and imports 39%. The main products exported were meat, chicken, mechanical and electronic equipment, with emphasis on the paper and derivatives segment. Regarding imports, the main goods are mechanics and electronics, plastics, rubbers, and textiles.
The largest draft for entering the public pier and APM Terminals was 11.7m and the exit was 12.3m. At the Portonave terminal, the largest draft for entry and exit was 12.1m.
