Last Saturday, September 17, the vessel GREAT QIN, from Panama, arrived at the Port of Itajaí for the terminal’s seventh yearly pulp export operation. The 199.99 meters long, 36.00 meters wide ship is scheduled to depart from the port on Thursday, the 22nd.

According to the Superintendence of the Port of Itajaí, the vessel from Punta Pereyra, Uruguay, is expected set sail with 25,000 pulp coils. Its final destination will be the port of Livorno in Italy.

The first pulp operation carried out at the Port of Itajaí, at the time still as a test operation, took place in August 2019 through the ship SAGA FANTASY, which contained 6,314 tonnes of pulp coils on board.

The Superintendent of the Port of Itajaí, Fábio da Veiga, informed that this type of operation gained momentum this year and provided the conditions for a breakthrough in innovation in the port sector, making it possible for the vessels to arrive once every month.

“One of the major highlights of this year’s cargo operations at the Port of Itajaí was pulp. It represents a very significant and highly demanded market, which encouraged our teams to join efforts and go the extra mile to make this operation possible. We are pleased to innovate operations and aid the port’s growth since the first vessel with pulp cargo docked at our pier. This kind of export-related activity now happens every month. For us, who strive and search daily for a modern and innovative port, each ship that arrives is a source of pride and joy,” states Fábio.

Pulp is a sort of cargo that is particularly fragile and can be transported in bales or coils. Therefore, logistics in the pulp and paper market require specialized equipment and attentive care to keep the goods dry and undamaged.

Furthermore, according to the Operations and Intelligence Coordination Team of the Port of Itajaí, throughout the seven pulp export held at the terminal this year, about 113.4 thousand tonnes of cargo landed in Itajaí.
