Port of Itajai to offer new container service in February

APM Terminals announced that the Port of Itajai will offer a new container service by the Panamanian shipowner CTM from February onwards. APMT is the contract holder for the port’s berths 1 and 2.

The first docking should take place on February 10th with the ship Theodor. After about a month without this type of operation, the service marks the return of container lines to Itajai.

“This new liner service marks the resumption of container handling at the Port of Itajai. Unfortunately, at the end of 2022, the Federal Government did not conduct the auction that had been planned to define the new port operator for the coming decades, causing significant instability. On our part, the municipal administration and APM Terminals will continue to work hard so that more lines come quickly to our port, and we already have good perspectives for the coming months”, highlights the mayor of Itajaí, Volnei Morastoni.

The service operated by CTM includes calls in three Brazilian ports and also in Montevideo, Cartegena, Santiago de Cuba, and Mariel. Also, the shipowner will offer a feeder service in the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Mexico. The service will focus on transporting food products and reefer cargo.

Fábio da Veiga, the superintendent of the Port of Itajai, guarantees that this is the first of many ships that will make their way back to the terminal in the coming months. The port is expected to resume full operation in March, with a throughput of more than 10,000 containers per month.

In addition to the announced service, in 2023, two break bulk cargo ships and one car ship have already brought their cargoes to the Port of Itajaí. By the end of January, another roll-on, roll-off vessel should arrive.
