Port of Itajaí Welcomes Over R$100 Million Worth of New Equipment

Mada Araújo, the company chosen to run the Port of Itajaí, started receiving equipment on Tuesday, the 15th and will use it for operations as soon as port activities resume.
Two of the twelve forklifts, with the capacity to lift forty-five-ton containers, made their way to the port terminal. In addition, 24 trucks for logistics, two MHCs (machines that resemble cranes), and tractors are en route to Itajaí.
The equipment is the payoff of about R$ 110 million in investments. After a year and a half without operations, the company expects that the equipment will be put to use by May.
“We are now waiting for clearance by the Federal Revenue Service; they are currently reviewing our customs documentation, and as soon as they finish doing it, we should be able to reinstate operations,” said Mada Araújo’s CEO, Marcos Antônio.
The chart below compares container exports and imports at the Port of Itajaí from January 2019 and December 2022, the period in which container operations began to dwindle at the port. The data is from DataLiner.

Upcoming steps
Mada Araújo has already received environmental licenses and now awaits authorization from the Federal Revenue Service for customs clearance to start using the terminal.
The process involves two distinct steps: “First, we submitted a protocol last month, on the 21st, that contained all documentation required for analysis. Following this, there’s an inspection of port operations while they are on the go, ensuring all safety measures are in place. Only after this, authorities will assess if everything meets the requirements for customs clearance,” clarified the company’s CEO.
Mada Araújo also spent around R$ 35 million on repairs to the port infrastructure, such as installing new heads and fenders, necessary equipment for ship mooring, refurbishing the yard floor, and the electrical wires of the area where containers are stored.
The company won the temporary leasing selection process at the end of last year with the promise to sustain a throughput of about 44 thousand container units per month, bringing hope to the more than 400 people directly and indirectly involved in port activities once again.
