Port of Itapoá follows expansion works schedule

The expansion works of the Porto Itapoá have already started and will be completed by the end of 2023. The expansion represents an important step for the terminal’s operations since cargo handling capacity will double. The port’s central patio will increase from the current 250,000 m² to 455,000 m².

The construction is proceeding as planned. Drainage infrastructure is now being built using pipework and protective plates. The overflow embankment is the project’s next phase, which is set to begin in June. A R$750 million investment will fund the expansion.

“This expansion will allow us to enhance our handling capacity from 1.2 million TEUs per year to 2 million TEUs,” said Cássio Schreiner, president of Porto Itapoá.

Investment in infrastructure

Porto Itapoá has been investing in infrastructure in anticipation of extending its service capacity. For example, five extra RTGs, a mobile crane on wheels appropriate for handling containers in the yard, were purchased.

The terminal already has 17 of these ZPMC-branded pieces of equipment. Still, the additional ones will be controlled remotely — Porto Itapoá will be the first in Brazil to have this technology. These machines will be delivered in January 2023.

The Porto Itapoá also purchased two new Reach Stacker forklifts, which are already in action and employed in terminal yard operations. The goal is to improve service between ship and yard by utilizing the RTG, a mobile crane used in port operations to move and stack containers.

Other significant purchases are the nine terminal tractor trucks (TTs) that will arrive in July, in addition to the nine buggies. The TT “carts” have already arrived. The vehicles join Rucker’s fleet of 40 vehicles, each of which can carry 65 tonnes or the equivalent of two 20-foot containers.
