Port of Itapoá handled 440,000 containers in 2020

In the last quarter of 2020, Port of Itapoá managed to recover a good part of the container movement that it had lost in the months before that due to the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The port moved only 4,000 import containers in June but tripled that number to 12,000 units per month in November and December. As a comparison, in the last three months of 2020, the terminal received 35,000 import containers, practically double the movements of the second and third quarters, and representing a 10% growth in relation to the last quarter of 2019.
In exports, however, handling remained constant, with an average of just over 7,000 units handled per month.
Since the beginning of its operations in June 2011, Port of Itapoá has always shown handling growth year on year, ending 2020 as one of the 5 largest ports in the country. When analyzing the tonnage numbers covering the port complexes of Santa Catarina, Babitonga Bay – which includes the Ports of São Francisco do Sul and Itapoá – registers the largest cargo handling in the state. The Babitonga port complex represents 60% of all cargo (in tonnage) that passes through Santa Catarina ports.
These figures directly reflect the region’s economy. Recently, IBGE released the richest cities in the south of Brazil, with Joinville occupying the 3rd position in the region and the 1st position in the state of Santa Catarina, with an increase of about 12% in relation to the previous year. The logistical and foreign trade flow provided by the ports of Babitonga Bay is a direct influencer for this development and, consequently, for the generation of jobs and income in the northern region of Santa Catarina.
