Port of Itapoá sees 18% increase in cargo volume in first half of 2023

The Port of Itapoá saw significant growth in the first half of 2023, with an 18% increase in cargo volume compared to the same period in 2022. The port handled 533,423 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in the first six months of 2023, up from 450,638 TEUs in the same period in 2022.

May was a record month for the port, with 98,113 TEUs handled. The port’s president, Cássio Schreiner, said that the growth was due to both import and export activity. “Cabotage also saw an increase in our terminal in this first half,” Schreiner added.

Long-haul imports saw the highest growth, from 124,425 TEUs in the first half of 2022 to 174,601 TEUs in the first half of 2023. This represents a 40% increase. “The cargo mix was quite varied, with the automotive and auto parts sector accounting for 6.5% of this amount, while the textile, clothing, and footwear sector accounted for just over 6%,” the terminal president exemplified. “China remains an important market for importers, being the origin of more than 30% of the imports that passed through the Port of Itapoá.”

Long-haul exports grew 24%, from 122,982 to 152,954 TEUs in 2023. Frozen or chilled meats were the most significant product, accounting for 27% of the total exports handled by the Port of Itapoá. “It is a segment in strong expansion, so we broke our all-time record for the export of reefer cargo in March, with 9,016 TEUs,” Schreiner stressed. Spain was the country that received the most exports operated by the Port of Itapoá, accounting for 8.2% of the total.

Conversely, Cabotage went from 73,805 to 82,299 TEUs, an increase of 11%. “It is also an important milestone for us, as we currently have services from the three largest shipowners working in cabotage in Brazil,” he concludes.

The movement of transport vehicles at the Gate, the entrance and exit door for trucks, also increased, with 232,325 movements recorded, 24% higher than in the previous year. Only in May, 44,159 movements were recorded, a record for the Terminal.
