On Wednesday (17), the Port of Itaqui, Arco Norte’s largest port, welcomed a delegation from the Department of the Environment (Sema) along with representatives from logistics company VLI. Their primary aim was to explore the area designated for the construction of a railway balloon loop, an innovative solution poised to significantly streamline loading and unloading operations at the port.
During the meeting, in collaboration with the Port’s Environmental Management, the implementation of this new rail system in a mesh configuration was deliberated upon, promising a more fluid movement of goods. Vital aspects regarding the project’s feasibility were addressed, including the imperative of obtaining environmental licenses for both the internal and external areas of the designated polygon.
Expanding the railway infrastructure at the Port of Itaqui is deemed crucial to enhancing port operations. Luane Lemos, Environment Manager at Itaqui, underscored the significance of the project, stating that it “will open doors to more cargo from other locations, inevitably boosting our activities.”
Hugo Rocha Silva, a market analyst at Sema, emphasized the importance of understanding the project’s environmental impact studies and related consultations, stating, “It’s crucial to comprehend the project’s area and its environmental implications.”
Flávio de Oliveira, an institutional relations specialist at VLI, expressed optimism about the project’s potential to bolster the port’s railway reception capacity and seamlessly connect with existing infrastructure.
The visit offered valuable insights into ongoing environmental initiatives, essential for securing the preliminary license required for project construction.
This collaborative effort between Porto do Itaqui, Sema, and VLI underscores a shared commitment to sustainability and the conscientious development of port activities.
