Port of Itaqui handles 5 million tonnes of corn

The Port of Itaqui handled more than 5 million tonnes of corn this year, a mark 81% above the volume of corn seen throughout 2021. Until the first week of November, more than 16 million tonnes of grains – including soybeans, soybean meal, and corn – were shipped through the Maranhão-based public port, an increase of more than 22% compared to the same period last year.

Soybeans, which are at the end of their harvest period, lead in terms of movement, with 11 million tonnes handled during the year. In total, Itaqui had a cargo throughput of 29 million tonnes, a volume 8% above last year. Corn was also a highlight, with 5 million tonnes shipped from January to October. This month alone, corn shipments accounted for 1.2 million tonnes.

“These numbers demonstrate the newly achieved capacity of the Port of Itaqui. Such an achievement encourages us to continue investing in expanding our infrastructure to meet the growing demand originating in the northern half of the country,” says the president of Porto of Itaqui, Ted Lago.

The port management public company EMAP expects a throughput of 31 million tonnes by November, the same as the total cargo movement recorded in 2021.

Record harvest

A record grain harvest is expected next year. A survey by the National Supply Company (Conab) indicates yields coming near 312.4 million tonnes, topping the record obtained in the recently ended harvest season (270.9 million tonnes).

In the state of Maranhão alone, soybean planting this year should occupy approximately 1.2 million hectares of land, 5% more than the area planted last year. And the producers expect that the production of grains in the state – soy and corn – in 2023 will exceed the mark of 7.1 million tonnes.
