The Port of Itaqui has made significant progress in its quest to decarbonize, with strategic partner Valenciaport completing the diagnostic phase of a comprehensive decarbonization plan. This initiative will make Itaqui the first public port in Brazil to implement such a plan. The diagnostic phase involved a thorough mapping of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the port complex, encompassing all aspects of port operations and the activities of the port community.
The results of this diagnostic phase, along with strategies for the next phase, were presented to the board of directors of the Maranhense Port Administration Company (Emap), which manages the Port of Itaqui. Subsequently, Valenciaport representatives engaged with port operators and other community stakeholders to discuss the findings and outline joint actions for implementing the plan.
Completing the diagnostic phase marks a critical milestone for the Port of Itaqui. The plan, based on accurate and comprehensive data, will enable the port to chart a strategic path toward significantly reducing GHG emissions, thus paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
Gilberto Lins, President of Porto do Itaqui, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “With this plan, Porto do Itaqui will encourage other ports and companies to promote environmental stewardship and ESG practices. A port committed to reducing emissions enhances the competitiveness of its cargo. We are following the guidance of Governor Carlos Brandão in our pursuit of sustainable development.”
Bruno Mota, Director of Planning and Development at Porto do Itaqui, underscored the significance of the data collected: “Surveys were conducted across various sectors of the economy, and the port industry not only planned ahead of its operational potential but did so with a focus on sustainable regional development.”
International Collaboration
The Valenciaport Foundation, a research and innovation institute associated with Spain’s largest port, the Port of Valencia, has been a crucial partner in this initiative. “In the coming months, we will be directly involved in preparing the plan, which includes a set of actions and investments,” said Jonas Mendes Constante, Project Director at Fundação Valencia Port.
With the diagnostic phase concluded, the Port of Itaqui is poised to move forward with the implementation of the Decarbonization Plan. This aligns the port with global objectives for reducing GHG emissions and promoting sustainable development.
The port’s pioneering efforts position it as a leader in fostering responsible environmental practices within the port sector. This initiative is expected to inspire other ports and companies in the sector to adopt similar measures, reinforcing the port’s commitment to environmental sustainability and competitive advantage.
