This week saw significant progress in logistics, development, and sustainability at the Port of Itaqui, reinforcing its commitment to efficiency and environmentally responsible growth. In a landmark operation, the port received one of the world’s largest pulp carriers for the first time: the Green Itaqui.
Built by Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers and named in tribute to the Port of Itaqui, the vessel has a carrying capacity of 77,000 tonnes, measuring 225 meters in length with eight cargo holds and a 14.5-meter draft.
What sets this ship apart is its innovative design, developed in partnership with Suzano under an agreement with Cosco Shipping to meet the company’s high transportation demands for pulp exports. The Green Itaqui is part of a series of vessels named after major Brazilian ports, including the Green Portocel, Green Santos, Green Rio Grande, Green Itajaí, and Green Itapoá.
According to Itaqui’s Operations Manager, Adauto Serpa, the vessel’s environmental performance is another key feature. “Equipped with cutting-edge technology, this ship emits 59% fewer pollutants compared to conventional vessels, ensuring a greener future for our planet,” he stated.
Beyond its increased cargo capacity and the optimization of maritime flows, the Green Itaqui symbolizes the global maritime community’s recognition of Itaqui’s potential. The port continues to enhance its operations while aligning with international sustainability goals.
Suzano’s Corporate Relations Manager, Rakel Dourado Murad, emphasized the strategic role of Itaqui’s infrastructure in enabling such operations. “Suzano believes in Maranhão! This operation reaffirms our commitment to the state. It’s important to highlight that this was only possible because the Port of Itaqui is well-equipped, with the infrastructure needed to handle deep-draft vessels and large cargo volumes,” she explained.
