Week 202432

In July, the Port of Itaqui achieved a historic milestone by handling 3.7 million tonnes of cargo throughput, surpassing the previous record of 3.6 million tonnes set in October 2023. Despite the intense rainfall in the first half of 2024, which was 10% higher than the previous year, solid bulk productivity increased by 9%, and other bulk cargo productivity rose by 6%.

The highlights of July included a 13.1% increase in solid bulk movement and a remarkable 44.9% surge in fertilizer throughput. Specifically, solid bulk cargo reached 2,931,296 tons, exceeding the 2,831,941 tons moved in October 2023. Fertilizer movement hit 478,228 tons, breaking the previous record of 454,910 tons set in December 2021.

“The growth in cargo throughput recorded by the Port of Itaqui reflects the hard work and synergy between our teams and partner companies. Exceeding productivity expectations and reaching new records reinforces our strategic position in the national scenario. We will continue to invest in efficiency and infrastructure to ensure that the Port of Development maintains its fundamental role in Brazil’s economy and logistics,” said Gilberto Lins, president of the Port of Itaqui.

Performance in the First Half of 2024

In the first half of 2024, the Port of Itaqui handled approximately 15.6 million tons of cargo throughput. Soybeans were the primary cargo, with 8,018,108 tons, accounting for 51.1% of the total handled during this period. This volume underscores the importance of agribusiness to the national economy and the strategic position of the Port of Itaqui as a critical channel for the flow of agricultural production in Brazil.

Other Highlights of the Semester

Diesel accounted for 2,899,024 tons, representing 18.5% of the total, while fertilizers amounted to 1,421,751 tons or 9.1% of the total. The significant diesel movement highlights the importance of fossil fuels for regional logistics and industry. Additionally, the import of fertilizers is crucial for sustaining regional agricultural production amid continued sector growth.

A notable investment in 2023 enabled ship-to-ship operations, resulting in an additional 235,000 tons handled in the first half of 2024, with seven ships serviced. One of these operations marked a milestone, handling crude oil for the first time in 40 years. Furthermore, after a test shipment of aluminum exports in December 2023, this cargo has been consolidating, with four ships serviced in the first half of the year, totaling 37,000 tons shipped by the end of July.
