Port of Itaqui sees 16% throughput growth in 1Q23

The Port of Itaqui achieved a historic milestone in March, recording its best-ever performance with a remarkable 3.11 million tons of cargo handled. This throughput represents a significant 22% increase compared to March 2022, the previous record. The detailed breakdown of cargo types reveals notable growth, with liquid bulk experiencing a 10% surge, solid bulk surging by an impressive 29%, and general cargo showing an 8% rise compared to the same period last year.

During the month, several commodities stood out, including domestic derivatives, LPG, caustic soda, soybeans, copper, fertilizers, and cellulose, surpassing the initial plan.

Furthermore, the cumulative cargo handling for the first three months of the year reached a remarkable 7.2 million tons, marking a notable 16% growth compared to the same period last year. Solid bulk cargo alone accounted for 4.6 million tons, reflecting a commendable 16% increase compared to the first quarter of 2022. Meanwhile, liquid bulk cargo also demonstrated robust growth, with 2.11 million tons handled during the period, registering an impressive 23% increase compared to the same timeframe last year.

Among the commodities, soybeans emerged as the top cargo, with a staggering 2.3 million tons handled during the period, followed by corn, which witnessed a remarkable 178% growth, reaching 1 million tons compared to the accumulated total of 2022. Additionally, copper and coal cargoes also experienced notable surges of 34% and 82%, respectively, further contributing to the Port of Itaqui’s impressive performance.

Gilberto Lins, the President of EMAP – Maranhense Port Administration Company, attributed these exceptional results to the relentless pursuit of results and continuous improvement by the Port of Itaqui’s management team, in close collaboration with commercial partners and stakeholders, fulfilling their role as a competent Port Authority on a daily basis.
