The Port of Itaqui won the 2022 Port Industry Excellence Award in the Port Infrastructure Development category, awarded by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Latin American Delegation of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA). The Maranhão-based public port was recognized for “expanding its physical port infrastructure with concrete and evidence-backed positive (local) economic impacts.”
This is the second edition of the Award, which evaluated 24 public and private port authorities from North America, Latin America and the Caribbean this year. According to the organizing committee, “the awards were given to institutions that demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence in their operations, improving the economic conditions of their communities and economies and promoting strategic alliances with the main stakeholders in their countries.”
The public port of Maranhão is experiencing a moment of full expansion of infrastructure, technology, and logistics, aimed at meeting the growing market demand and strengthening the various busy production chains.
Investments – From January 2019 to date, investments in infrastructure in the Port of Itaqui total R$ 2.7 billion between public and private resources.
This year, a set of works was started, totaling more than R$ 500 million investment by port authority EMAP. The initiative is part of the company’s strategic plan to raise the port’s cargo handling capacity above 40 million tons/year by 2025.
The planned works include constructing a new berth (98), requalifying operational support buildings and gatehouses, road infrastructure, and sanitary sewage in the port’s polygon area, and widening the ramps at the Ponta da Espera and Cujupe ferry terminals.
Operating at a new level, represented by the 31 million tonnes cargo throughput in 2021, the Port of Itaqui is a major logistics hub for Brazil’s central and northern regions.
The award ceremony will be held on November 30, during the 30th Latin American Congress of Ports, in Santos (SP).
