Port of Los Angeles to test manure-derived hydrogen fuel

A member of the Toyota group will begin a four-year trial at one of the largest US ports using cargo equipment powered by manure-derived hydrogen fuel.
The pilot program will take place in the Port of Los Angeles from February to March 2026, Japanese commodities and equipment distributor Toyota Tsusho said on Tuesday, December 21st.
Seven machines will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells, including a crane, container unloading machines, and trucks.
The hydrogen will be derived from renewable natural gas, also known as biomethane. Extracted from manure produced on farms and transformed into fuel, this gas contributes to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
The Port of Los Angeles plans to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions stemming from equipment use by 2035. Making the equipment electric is another solution, but the time it takes to recharge batteries makes manure-derived hydrogen fuel a better alternative.
The pilot program will assess the durability of the equipment and the efficiency of the hydrogen fuel. Other Japanese companies will participate in the tests. Mitsui E&S Machinery will provide maintenance support while Hino Motors will provide the trucks.
Toyota Tsusho completed an economic feasibility analyzes that began at the port last year. More than 1,000 pieces of equipment are in operation at the port.
