The port of Montevideo continues to assert its position on the East Coast of South America with growing container figures. The first month of this year came to a close with cargo throughput 33% higher than in January 2023.
Juan Curbelo, President of the National Ports Administration (ANP), told Subrayado that for the third consecutive year, between 2021 and 2023, a record was set in container traffic.
Curbelo emphasized the importance of these figures, as he believes they support the current administration’s vision, as well as the Port of Montevideo‘s position moving forward.
The head of the ANP noted that the increase in January’s throughput at Uruguay’s main port terminal was very significant. “We continue to build loyalty with containerized cargo coming from Paraguay, southern Argentina, and Brazil, which is the element that drives our growth,” he said.

Curbelo indicated that 50% of the cargo handled at the port corresponds to exports and imports, while the other half is third-party cargo. “For us, this transshipment and transit cargo is very important to achieve our objectives and to continue growing,” he stressed.
