Port of Natal handling down 21% in the 1st. semester

Cargo handling at the Port of Natal showed a drop of 21.23% in the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2020. The data are from Companhia das Docas do Rio Grande do Norte (CODERN), which manages the terminal . The figures indicate that from January to June 2021, 243,203 tons were handled at the site, while in 2020, there were 308,765 tons handled in the same period. In last year’s year-to-date figure, the quantity of cargo handled at the Port of Natal had already shown a reduction compared to 2019: 8.8% according to CODERN.

The secretary of agriculture, fisheries, and livestock of RN, Guilherme Saldanha, explains that structural problems have resulted in the reduction of handling in the Port of Natal. To try to reverse the losses, he suggests the creation of a dry port, which would be built outside the terminal’s limits. “In the medium-term, we need a dry port, which is a space isolated by walls and with complete safety, for the clearance of goods by the federal revenue, ministry of agriculture, and police. Security (clearance) would be done there, and then the container would go straight to the port, already sealed. Thus, it is possible to give greater flexibility to port activities in Natal”, he suggests.
