Port of Navegantes kickstarts expansion phase for reefer cargo
Jan, 17, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202303
The Port of Navegantes (Portonave) kickstarted expansion works to increase the capacity of frozen cargo containers (reefer). The project, which will cost BRL 58 million, calls for the installation of 1,200 new sockets by August 2023. In total, the Terminal will have over 3,000 active sockets.
The work aims to meet the growing demand, given that reefer containers transport approximately 37% of the cargo exported by Portonave. This movement reached 129,361 TEUs (20-foot container equivalent units) in 2022, with apples, poultry and pork, frozen potatoes, onion rings, and frozen vegetables as the main cargo.
According to Datamar data, from January to October 2022, the state of Santa Catarina accounted for 30% of reefers in Brazil, both in imports and exports. Portonave alone was responsible for 15% of this type of cargo nationwide, considering exports and imports altogether.
The fact that Santa Catarina state is one of Brazil’s leading producers of animal protein also favors this type of shipment via the Port of Navegantes. This is also due to the availability of shipping lines to various parts of the world, such as European countries (the leading origin of imported cargo) and Asian countries (the top 1 destination of exported cargo).
Reefers and Iceport cargo in synergy
The work of reefer cargo is in synergy with Iceport, Portonave’s specialized logistics center for refrigerated cargo. Fully automated, the Chamber has an area of 50,000 m², has static storage capacity for 16,000 pallet positions, and an antechamber with 13 docks for receiving and dispatching goods.
With approximately 1,000 professionals, Portonave maintains constant investments in expansion with a focus on productivity and operational quality. Currently, the Terminal yard has an area of 400,000 m² and a handling capacity of 1.3 million TEUs per year.
