Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced, “More progress is on the way for Niterói,” during a ceremony marking the start of dredging operations in the São Lourenço Canal, held at the Niterói city’s downtown port on Tuesday (2).
A collaboration between the Federal Government and the Municipality of Niterói, the dredging of the São Lourenço Canal will enhance access to the city’s Industrial and Port Complex.
By dredging a section of the Guanabara Bay between Ilha da Conceição and the Rio-Niterói Bridge, the depth of the area will increase from 7 to 11 meters. This will facilitate better operations for shipyards, encourage the construction of new vessels, and bolster the repair and offshore sectors.
This initiative is expected to boost production across various sectors and create around 20,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Joining Mayor Axel Grael and Niterói’s executive secretary, Rodrigo Neves, at the event were Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro and Maricá Mayor Fabiano Horta.
Investments
Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, announced that the federal government will invest R$ 140 million in the dredging project and allocate R$ 60 million for the construction of an access channel to the Barreto Fishery Terminal. The terminal’s purchase by the municipality was formalized during the event. Upon completion of the São Lourenço Canal dredging, the terminal is slated to become a hub for fishing activities, benefiting the maritime sector and creating employment opportunities.
Meanwhile, the municipality disclosed plans to invest approximately R$ 138 million to expand access to the city’s Industrial and Port Complex and revitalize the segment focused on the Blue Economy. The project aims to generate around 20,000 direct and indirect jobs and is scheduled to be completed within 15 months.
Mayor Axel Grael highlighted the city’s long wait for the São Lourenço Canal project, spanning 15 years:
“We needed significant investments for dredging the canal, which will enable the arrival of vessels with greater draft.”
