The Port of Paranaguá is the main outlet for Brazilian soybean oil. More than 70% of Brazil’s 1.7 million tons exported in 2021 left the port located in Paraná. The product’s shipments increased by 34% in the last year, from 904,332 tonnes in 2020 to 1.2 million tonnes in 2021.
The figures come from the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries (Abiove), and they back up the data compiled by Portos do Paraná. “The liquid bulk terminals and operators in Paranaguá, both on public and private piers, are highly qualified and provide excellent services and structure,” says operations director Luiz Teixeira da Silva Junior.
In addition to soybean oil, Paranaguá has the capacity to operate liquids such as alcohol and petroleum derivatives. Internal and external investments allow for the expansion of the tanking area, modernization of piping and pumping systems.
In total, 7.9 million tons of liquid bulk were handled in 2021(4% more than the 7.6 million tons recorded in 2020). Exports accounted for 23.5% of the total (1.86 million tons) and soybean oil was the main product shipped (65%). The sale of the commodity brought in $1.31 billion in revenue.
Cattalini, a company that manages the Private Use Terminal (TUP) in Paranaguá and operates the cargo in two berths on its own pier, handled the soybean oil.
India and China are the main destinations for the product, which originates in Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais and Goiás.
