Port of Paranagua sees over USD 2.23 billion in frozen meat in 1Q23

In the first quarter of 2023, the Paranaguá Container Terminal (TCP) saw more than USD 2.23 billion in frozen meat exports. The data, gathered from Comex Stat, a system by the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce, and Services (MDIC), revealed a significant 44% growth compared to the same period last year.
The TCP holds immense national significance as a hub for the export of animal protein, with a staggering 33% of the volume sold and shipped abroad passing through its facilities, according to the DataLiner data system. Notably, it is the sole terminal in the country’s southern region with direct rail access to the customs zone, accounting for 25% of protein volume transported via this mode.
Frozen meat is the TCP’s primary export commodity, with 38,235 containers handled during the period, marking a 28% increase compared to the first four months of 2022. Chicken meat dominates the volume, representing 80% of the goods moved, with Asia serving as the primary destination responsible for 66% of the total volume purchased.
Largest reefer yard
Being equipped with Brazil’s largest reefer yard, a space specifically designed for temperature-controlled containers, has contributed to the surge in shipments. Giovanni Guidolim, the logistics manager at TCP, attributes the growth to the terminal’s infrastructure. By the end of 2023, the reefer yard’s capacity will expand from 3,572 to 5,126 outlets, representing a 43% increase in storage capacity for this type of cargo.
Guidolim further highlights that TCP boasts the highest concentration of maritime lines in Brazil, connecting the country to Asia and Europe. He adds, “We are making significant investments in the reefer area to meet the growing market demand, and we have also constructed a power substation to support the expansion.”

Beef exports
Additionally, TCP’s flexibility in accommodating advanced shipments of refrigerated volumes for export has led to an impressive 137% growth in beef handling during the first quarter of this year. One of the states benefiting from this measure is Mato Grosso, accounting for 35% of beef exports from Paraná.
The expectation for the coming months is further growth, particularly in beef exports. Giovanni explains, “With the authorization of several processing units to export beef to China and the lifting of the Chinese embargo on this type of meat, we anticipate even greater demand for the protein.”
