Port of Paranagua to bid liquid bulk terminal on Feb 24th

The government of Parana will hold the auction on Friday, February 24, for the lease of a liquid bulk terminal in the Port of Paranagua. The auction aims to select the most advantageous proposal, based on the highest grant value, to ink a lease agreement for the port area and correlated public infrastructure.

The area, called PAR50, covers just over 85,000 square meters and is located on the west side of the port. The expected investment is at least R$ 338.2 million. The lease term is 25 years, renewable at the discretion of the granting authority.

The leasing contract of the area dedicated to moving liquid bulk cargo stipulates mixed-use storage facilities, with 18 vertical tanks installed and a total capacity of approximately 70,181 m³, in addition to piping, pumping, administrative, and utility areas.

Throughput record

According to Portos do Paraná, in 2022, the port received 84 more liquid carriers than in 2021 (627 compared to 543 respectively). The increase in the berthing of liquid bulk vessels was 15%, the highest among all cargo segments that sail in this southern Brazilian port.

Last year, 8,719,731 tonnes of liquid bulk were either loaded or unloaded at the Port of Paranaguá, 10% more than in 2021, with 7,948,839 tonnes.

Luiz Fernando Garcia, the director-president of Portos do Paraná, points out that, although the segment represents only 15% of the general movement of the ports of Paraná, the growth seen among liquid cargoes was the most expressive.

“The rise in demand from the liquid bulk sector has been gradual, and we are preparing to meet this future market need,” he said.

From 2019 to 2022, the increase recorded in the volume of liquids handled by the Port of Paranaguá is 26%. In 2019, there were 2.6 million tonnes of these bulk materials. In 2020, we were talking about 7.6 million tonnes.

Port structure

The Port of Paranaguá has four mooring berths dedicated to liquid vessels – two at the public pier and another two at the Cattalini company’s private use terminal. At the public dock, in 2022, 288 berthings were recorded (11% more than the 260 registered in 2021). At Cattalini, 339 moorings (20% higher than in 2021, with 283).

Imports of liquid bulk goods stand out due to their volume. The arrival of liquids through the Port of Paranaguá totaled approximately 5.1 million tonnes last year.

What stands out among exports is the percentage increase. Around 2 million tonnes of liquids were exported through the Port of Paraná in 2022. The growth reached 31% compared to 1.5 million tonnes in 2021.

The main liquid cargoes handled at Paranaguá are diesel oil imports (2.6 million tonnes, representing nearly 46% of total liquids imported by Brazil) and soy oil exports (1.5 million tonnes, representing 65% of total liquids exported by the country).

The volume of imported diesel oil in 2022 is nearly the same as last year. On the other hand, soy oil increased by 27% year on year, with 1.1 million tonnes exported.
