Soybean exports, including grains and meals, reached a record-breaking volume of 2,567,755 tonnes in May 2023 through the East Corridor of the Port of Paranaguá (Corex). This achievement marks the highest monthly volume since the corridor’s establishment in 1973, surpassing the previous record of 2,474,705 tonnes shipped in April 2020.
Luiz Fernando Garcia, the director-president of Portos do Paraná, expressed his satisfaction with the results. Initially, the terminals anticipated loading around 2 million tonnes during the first quarter but exceeded expectations by almost 568 thousand tonnes. Despite the absence of corn shipments, Garcia emphasized the remarkable productivity and improved operating times.
Notable improvements were observed in the corridor’s performance, and the average berthing time decreased from 2.81 days in May 2022 to 2.31 days in May 2023. Concurrently, the average shipment productivity increased from 850.41 tonnes/hour to 1,155.83 tonnes/hour. Given the challenging drought conditions, Garcia highlighted the exceptional daily shipment productivity of 94,402.76 tonnes.
The total volume of 2,567,755 tonnes reflects a significant growth of 49.5% compared to May 2022, when 1,718,048 tonnes were handled. Soybeans accounted for 74% (1,912,307 tonnes), while soybean meal comprised the remaining 26% (655,448.5 tonnes). Notably, no corn or wheat shipments were recorded through the east corridor in May.
Despite a two-day rain-related halt, YTD, Corex has already loaded 9,014,528 tonnes from January to May 2023. This represents a 17.2% increase compared to the 7,693,161 tonnes registered during the same period in 2022.
Regarding soybeans specifically, May witnessed the highest volume movement of the year, with 1,912,307 tonnes. The monthly soybean handling totals were as follows: 346,881 tonnes in January, 324,670 tonnes in February, 954,833 tonnes in March, and 1,409,057 tonnes in April.
The East Export Corridor of the Port of Paranaguá operates through three berths: 212, 213, and 214. Last month, 40 ships were loaded, surpassing the figure from May 2022. Berth 213 emerged as the busiest, with 16 boats and 1,054,688 tonnes of cargo.
The complex encompasses public silos, both vertical and horizontal, operated by members of the Export Corridor Port Operators Association (AOCEP). These include AGTL, Cargill, Cimbesul, South Center, I cook, Coamo II, Cotriguaçu, Interalli, Louis Dreyfus, and Rock, all interconnected by conveyor belts.
