The Port of Pecém concluded 2023 with a record throughput of steel plates produced by ArcelorMittal Pecém. A total of 2,974,252 tonnes were shipped on 81 vessels. The record was set on December 30, with the loading of the Spar Pyxis ship, bound for the Port of Mobile (United States), and the Iraklis ship, headed for the Port of Paulsboro (United States). The previous best result occurred in 2018, with a shipped volume of 2,969,845 tonnes on 79 vessels.
The commercial director of the Pecém Complex, André Magalhães, commented that the record was the result of investments in new equipment and the intensive work of the Pecém Complex and ArcelorMittal Pecém team. “The use of new electromagnetic and MHC-type cranes, combined with the dedication of our team, allowed us to surpass the 2018 record. We are preparing the port to grow further this year and expect to exceed 3 million tons of steel plates,” he said.
ArcelorMittal Pecém CEO Erick Torres reinforced the importance of the partnership between the steel producer, the industry’s supply chain, and the Port of Pecém. “We are happy to contribute to the state of Ceará through the dedication of our employees. Until reaching the port terminal for shipment, thousands of people put their knowledge into practice, from work in the Raw Materials Yard to the consolidation of the steel plate in the Steel Mill, reaching logistics for the port, which takes steel from Ceará to Brazil and the world. Congratulations on the result, and let’s continue together, creating value for everyone,” highlighted the executive.
ArcelorMittal is located in the Ceará Export Processing Zone (ZPE Ceará) on a vast 500-hectare site with fiscal benefits due to its location in a customs area. Steel plates are one of the primary products handled by the Port of Pecém, which also operates other cargo types such as containers, wind turbine blades, and coke.
