Port of Pecém breaks record for TEUs handled on a single vessel

The Port of Pecém started the week with a new record: in just 49 hours, it operated 7,391 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) on a single vessel, the MSC Mariagrazia. The 366-meter-long giant arrived from the Port of Caucedo in the Dominican Republic last Friday (27th) and remained at Pecém until yesterday (29th) when it departed for the Port of Suape.
“These figures demonstrate our capacity, efficiency, and excellence in handling such a massive operation in such a short time. We have a solid operations team that has proven to be well-prepared to handle complex operations like this, which is certainly one of the largest ever recorded in Brazil,” highlighted Roberto de Castro, Operations Director of the Pecém Complex.
In this operation, the Port of Pecém acted as a hub, receiving various transshipment cargoes that will stay at the terminal until they are shipped to their final destinations. “Pecém is strategically located on this route, which initially comes from Asia and passes through the Dominican Republic before arriving in Brazil, without operational restrictions. This allows for progressively faster arrivals in the Northeast, with an average reduction of 10 days in transit time. We are currently negotiating to receive two more ships of this size this year,” said André Magalhães, Commercial Director of the Pecém Complex.
He explained that this initiative brings benefits not only to the Port of Pecém but also to society and the state as a whole. “Due to their size, these ships can transport significantly larger cargo volumes per voyage. This reduces the number of trips required to move the same amount of goods, which in turn lowers total fuel consumption, CO2 emissions per ton transported, and congestion at ports,” he added.
About the Port
From January to August 2024 alone, the Port of Pecém has handled more than 12 million tonnes of cargo, a 12% increase compared to the same period last year. The port is part of the Pecém Complex (CIPP S/A), a joint venture between the state government and the Port of Rotterdam. Pecém is a multi-cargo terminal that handles solid bulk, liquid bulk, containers, and general cargo at its ten berths. Currently, it is served by seven cabotage lines and three long-haul routes.
