The Port of Pecém ended 2024 with impressive figures, handling 19.6 million tons, a 13% increase compared to 2023 (17.3 million tons). The terminal also saw an increase of 96 ships compared to the previous year. Additionally, the port set a new container handling record, reaching 555,000 units, a 15% increase from 2023 (482,930 containers).

Another highlight of the year was solid bulk cargo, which grew 21%. Iron ore shipments exceeded 5.3 million tons within this segment, with 600,000 tons exported to China.

“It was a very special year, the second-best in the history of the Port of Pecém. For the first time, we surpassed 500,000 containers. We also performed well in the solid bulk sector, resuming iron ore exports to China. This demonstrates the robustness of our terminal and our team’s commitment. These results reflect the hard work of our employees, the support of our port operators and partners, and the trust of our clients,” said André Magalhães, Commercial Director of the Pecém Complex.

Breakbulk and Key Market Segments

Breakbulk cargo grew by 3.3%, reaching 3,782,971 tons. The steel sector stood out with 728,412 tons, a growth of 18.5% compared to 2023. Granite exports also saw a significant increase of 32%, totaling 43,000 tons. Additionally, fertilizer imports surged by 181%, reaching 35,000 tons.

“This growth is only possible due to our terminal’s flexibility and high capacity. We set a record for handling in a single vessel, the MSC Mariagrazia, with over 7,000 TEUs in one operation. Our operations are efficient and secure, and we expect to continue this strong growth in 2025,” stated Roberto de Castro, Operations Director of the Pecém Complex.

Strategic Projects

The year 2024 was also crucial for consolidating the Green Hydrogen Hub. In addition to President Lula’s approval of the Low-Carbon Hydrogen Legal Framework at the Port of Pecém, the port signed three new pre-contracts for H2V production with Voltalia, FRV, and Fuella AS, totaling R$ 15 billion in investments.

*”Additionally, we signed two contracts in the oil and gas sector: one for a new greenfield fuel terminal with Dislub/TMB, set to begin operations in 2027, and another for a greenfield LPG storage and distribution terminal with Supergasbras and Ultragaz, expected to start in 2028, pending review and approval from *CADE (Administrative Council for Economic Defense),” added Magalhães.
