In the year it completed 20 years of operation, the Pecém port terminal, which is part of the Pecém Port Complex (CIPP S.A.), a joint venture between the government of Ceará and the Port of Rotterdam, reached another milestone: it obtained a new container throughput record in 2022. In total, 417,132 TEUs were handled at the Ceará-based port, up 2% compared to 2021, with 410,557 TEUs handled.
As a result, the Port of Pecém managed, for the second time in its history, to beat the 400 thousand-TEU mark, proving, more and more, its efficiency, agility, and world-class operational capacity. In terms of units, 247,377 boxes were handled throughout last year vis-a-vis 244,811 units in 2021.
In November 2022 alone, 43,186 TEUs were handled at the Port of Pecém, the best monthly result obtained in a single month over the past year and, in addition, the second-best monthly throughput in the history of the port terminal, only trailing the 46,002 TEUs registered in October 2020.
Cabotage – cargo transportation between the Port of Pecém and other Brazilian ports – accounted for 365,563 TEUs in 2022, a 6% increase compared to the previous year. As for long-haul shipments, the transportation of containers corresponded to 51,569 TEUs.

Volume (tonnes)
The containerized cargo volume increased to 5,563,616 tonnes last year, the second-busiest type of cargo in the Port of Pecém – short only from solid bulk, with 7,403,278 t. Containerized cargo was, therefore, the second most relevant type of cargo moved at the port, with a 33% share.
Compared to 2021, the movement of containerized cargo, in tonnes grew by 3% year-to-date.
Total movement
The total cargo moved year-to-date was 17,112,232 t in 2022, 10,624,987 t of which corresponded to landings, while another 6,333,754 t corresponded to shipments. Cabotage accounted for 62% of this movement, while long-haul navigation had a 38% share.
The biggest highlight in terms of cargo movement was solid bulk, in particular ores, slag, and mineral fuels. Containerized cargo also played an important role, as well as loose cargo.
