Portos RS, the Port Authority responsible for the ports in Rio Grande do Sul, announced that the port in Porto Alegre has temporarily suspended operations. The reason is the rise in the water level of Lake Guaíba recorded on the 22nd and the subsequent encroachment on the pier.
Porto Alegre woke up without rain, but, as expected, around 11:30 am, the weather changed. “To resume activities, it will be necessary to wait for the waters to recede and the reopening of the gates by Dmae,” says Portos RS.
The other ports in the state continue to operate.
Operations in Porto Alegre
Despite having fluvial characteristics, the port of Porto Alegre is classified as a maritime port. It maintains 8 km of quay, divided between the Mauá, Navegantes, and Marcílio Dias quays. Its structure includes 25 warehouses with 70,000 m², in a total area of 450,000 m².
Since the first half of 2005, the public port’s operating area has been concentrated on the Navegantes quay. It has the capacity to operate up to three long-haul ships simultaneously.
The zoning of the port of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul includes distinct areas for multipurpose terminals, grains, fertilizers, and general cargo. In the last five years, the port of Porto Alegre, along with private terminals, handled around 6 million tonnes of products per year, such as maritime platform mooring cables, fertilizers, salt, vegetable grains, electrical transformers, and cellulose.
From January to October, the throughput growth seen at the port of Porto Alegre was 4.47%. Fertilizers remain the top cargo with 459,458 tonnes. Barley loads reached 96,832 tonnes, followed by bovine tallow, with 70,550 tonnes; wheat, with 53,003 tonnes; salt, with 34,701 tonnes; soybean meal, with 1,974 tonnes; and general cargo, with 1,603 tonnes.
