The terminal that requires the most investment is REC 08, which is designed to handle malt, wheat, and corn and is expected to cost R$ 50.9 million. Other terminals include REC 04, which will handle soda ash and fertilizers with an estimated investment of R$ 3.6 million; REC 09, which will handle rice and will require approximately R$ 2.2 million in investments; and REC 10, which will handle soda ash and will require R$ 2.9 million in investments for implementation.
From January to December 2023, the Port of Recife recorded a cargo throughput of 1,374,340 tonnes. It is expected to witness a 25% growth in throughput in 2024. Some of the most commonly handled products last year included wheat, steel coils, and sugar.
Traditionally, the Port of Recife has a knack for exporting sugar and importing goods—such as wheat, rice, fertilizers, and soda ash—not locally produced, supplying not only Recife but also nearby cities.
Once part of the former Portobrás, the Port of Recife is now administered by the government of Pernambuco. The state-owned entity can accommodate up to nine vessels simultaneously at its berths. Spanning an area of 114,000 m², it features covered warehouses with a storage capacity of around 60,000 tons and yards for various cargoes, totaling a storage capacity of approximately 50,000 tons.
The chart below compares the volume of cargo exported and imported at the Port of Recife from Jan 2019 to Dec 2023. The data is from DataLiner.

More auctions on the horizon
Also in the Northeast region of the country, Antaq plans to hold an auction for the leasing of a container terminal at the Port of Mucuripe in Fortaleza. The estimated investment value has not been disclosed, but it will directly compete with the Port of Pecém in Greater Fortaleza.
Nationwide, Antaq aims to conduct 19 port leasing auctions this year, including 16 concessions by the Federal Government and three projects at the Port of Paranaguá in Paraná, where administration is decentralized. Together, they will require an investment of R$ 11.7 billion. The majority of auctions are slated for August.
Most of the ports to be auctioned for leasing were once part of Portobras, which ceased to exist in the 1990s.
