Vessels with a greater cargo capacity will circulate more easily through the Port of Recife in Pernambuco following the completion of dredging. This work is conducted by the Federal Government’s Ministry of Infrastructure in collaboration with the state government of Pernambuco, which increased the depth in the port’s region.
The service contract included dredging operations in the Port of Recife, initial and final hydrographic studies, and executive project preparation for a total expenditure of R$ 27.9 million. Workers removed 1 million cubic meters of soil and silt from the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT). The municipality provided the resources, and the Port of Recife completed the construction.
Such a measure favors cargo flow and, consequently, encourages import and export operations for national and foreign cargo. The port is part of the Mercosur navigation route and other prominent international service lines. Recife terminals serves sites as far as 1,000 kilometers – including the states of Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas, Sergipe, Piauí, Ceará and Bahia.
As it is located in an urban center on the banks of the Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers, the port is considered a strategic access point to the metropolitan region and the coast. Moreover, it is 60 kilometers away from the industrial and pharmacochemical pole of Goiana.
