Last Friday, 07/26, the first operation called TOP OFF took place in Port Rio Grande (RS). The maneuver consists of a complement of cargo between Port Novo and the public dock in the Rio Grande Shipyard area, in the Superport, aiming to complement the ship’s cargo to its limit. The National Waterway Transportation Agency has authorized three test operations for the system.

In Port Novo, the operational draft of the wharf is 9.45 meters, which prevents some ships from leaving the port with a full cargo. “We started our activities in November and there was a need to operate in two ports due to the draft of Rio Grande Port. We are having this opportunity that has been conquered by the Superintendence so that this operation could be completed in the municipality”, says Fernanda Salomão Hackbart, CEO of Connexion Export, which is exporting logs to China through the port operator Sagres.

The Port Superintendency is alongside the National Port Secretariat making the change to the port’s Development and Zoning Plan (PDZ), making that area effectively publicly available to allow this type of operation more steadily at the Shipyard. “This operation is extremely important because it generates revenue, moves an area that had been unused for three years and opens up the possibility of using part of the yard to move cargo. It is an important milestone for the company,” said Ecovix Chief Operating Officer Ricardo Ávila. Without this ERG completion operation, the ship would go to Imbituba, Santa Catarina, before heading to China.

“With this possibility, we consolidated the total operation of important cargo. I emphasize that there will be no operations that conflict with the private terminals and only for top off, that is, the ship first loads in Porto Novo and receives the complementation of cargo at the shipyard”, concludes Estima. Fernanda Hackbart also points out that in this complementation operation another 8,000 tons should be loaded causing the ship to leave the complete port with 36,000 tons being exported.
