An investment of R$ 16.5 million aims to integrate vessel traffic control at the Port of Rio Grande, one of Brazil’s key logistics hubs. Implementing the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system, led by the Rio Grande do Sul Maritime Local Productive Arrangement Association (APL) in partnership with Portos RS, seeks to enhance efficiency and safety in port operations.
According to APL’s coordination, the VTS will enable real-time monitoring of all vessels operating at the port, considering weather conditions and technical variables such as tides, wind, and draft. The technology will also provide more precise data to determine the safety of maneuvers, optimizing port productivity.
“Navigation will be based on technological data rather than assumptions. This represents a significant leap forward in the safety and efficiency of maritime traffic,” emphasized Richard Grantham, Chairman of the Board of Directors of APL Marítimo.
The construction of the system’s remote station tower, located on the commercial quay of Porto Novo, is nearing completion. Integration and operation testing of the system are set to begin in the first half of 2025.
In December, APL also inaugurated the Naval Maneuver Simulation Center (CSN) renovation at the Oceantec Technological Park at FURG. The center was modernized after an investment of R$ 250,000, featuring a new room and technological updates that enable simultaneous simulations between ships and tugboats.
With these upgrades, the CSN can test new maneuvers directly in the city, eliminating the need to travel to major urban centers. This improves the safety and agility of port operations, such as pilotage.
