As the gateway for a large portion of goods consumed by the people of Bahia and for the export of the state’s riches, the Port of Salvador is about to enter a new phase on July 1st. For the first time, both berths equipped to receive transoceanic ships will operate simultaneously at the Container Terminal (Tecon Salvador). Since the beginning of the concession term in 2020, the Wilson Sons Group’s equipment has received R$ 1 billion in investments, with R$ 443 million between 2018 and 2020.
With the start of simultaneous operations, Tecon is expected to put the capital of Bahia in a unique logistical situation among Brazilian ports that handle containers. Salvador is expected to be the only port with idle space, that is, with free docking areas to be occupied, which is a significant attraction factor for new operations, according to Demir Lourenço Júnior, executive director of Tecon Salvador. By 2050, the group plans to invest an additional R$ 715 million in the expansion of the port.
After the latest interventions, the capacity to receive cargo increased from 430,000 TEUs to 553,000 TEUs per year. The forecast is to increase this capacity to 925,000 TEUs.
With such investments, Tecon will have a continuous 800-meter-long quay, an area that is sufficient to simultaneously receive two 380-meter-long ships, the largest currently sailing along the Brazilian coast. In the future, the concession-holder plans to add 80,000 square meters in infrastructure for the storage and movement of cargo.
Demir Lourenço highlighted the investments in Tecon as responsible for the increased productivity in container handling at the port. The average in 1999 was 7.5 containers per hour, while it is currently 76, with some peaks, such as in January, when the terminal set a new record of 110 containers handled per hour.
