Port of Santos appoints new president
Apr, 27, 2020 Posted by Sylvia SchandertWeek 202019
Brazil’s Infrastructure Ministry (Minfra) and the Santos Port Authority (SPA) report that the current Director of Administration and Finance at SPA, Fernando Biral, has been appointed to the position of interim CEO of the Company, replacing naval engineer Casemiro Tércio Carvalho, who resigned from his position last Friday, April 24. The reason for his resignation has not been clarified.
With a degree in Business Administration from Fundação Getúlio Vargas, Fernando Biral joined SPA in April 2019. His mission was to optimize the company’s investment program. Among the actions he has led, is the reversal of a R$468 million loss (2018) into a net profit of R$87.3 million (2019); an increase in cash generation potential; the Voluntary Dismissal Incentive Plan (PIDV); and addressing the historic deficit of the port workers’ pension fund, Portus, giving a guarantee that thousands of families would receive the benefits.
“In this one year we have reversed historical losses in positive operating and financial results. We will have the challenge of consolidating these gains and positioning the company on a new level of cash generation and profits. In the short term, we will work together with the Ports Secretariat (SNPTA) to accelerate auctions for new terminals and with the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), which is being contracted by SNPTA to structure the project for privatization. This is another step towards boosting and encouraging private investments in the port sector,” says Biral.
