Port of Santos breaks throughput record set in 2022

The Port of Santos broke, still in November, the throughput record set in the 12 months of 2021 (147.0 million tonnes) by moving 150.4 million tonnes from January to November, up 11.5% from the same period last year. Shipments increased by 15.7%, accounting for 109.8 million tonnes. Landings increased by 1.5%, reaching 40.6 million tonnes.
Agribusiness goods continued to play a leading role in the port, mainly through operations of soybeans (+12.2%), corn (+85.0%), cellulose pulp (+57.2%), and meat (+ 29.4%).
Container movement also grew, rising 5.3% compared to the previous year, totaling 4.6 million TEU, the highest mark for the period.

All the different cargo segments showed significant growth and reached their highest marks for the period. Loose general cargo movement grew 42.3%, totaling 8.9 million tonnes, with pulp operations standing out (7.4 million tonnes).
Solid bulk increased by 16.7%, totaling 76.2 million tonnes, with soybean shipments (25.4 million tonnes), corn (13.3 million tonnes), sugar (18.9 million tonnes), and fertilizer imports dominating (7.4 million tonnes). The volume of liquid bulk operated also grew, increasing by 4.6% to 17.4 million tonnes, focusing on fuel oil (2.8 million tonnes) and citrus juices (2.4 million tonnes).
The port saw 4,757 moorings over the first eleven months of the year, a growth of 7.4%.
Santos’ throughput in November alone also hit record levels, 12.2 million tonnes, up 8.2% over the same month last year.
Trade flow – The share of the Port of Santos in the Brazilian trade flow remained at 29%. China was Brazil’s partner in approximately 25% of commercial transactions involving the Sao Paulo-based port, which was the federation unit with the highest participation (44.1%) in commercial transactions with other countries that had the Port of Santos as an outlet.
