According to the São Paulo State Port Operators Union (Sopesp), after a meeting held by workers and representatives of companies at the Port of Santos to discuss working conditions during the coronavirus pandemic, it was determined that operations at Brazil’s largest port would be maintained. At the meeting it was also decided that safety measures would be reinforced to prevent contagion by the coronavirus.
Before the meeting, the vice president of the Administrative Workers Union in Capatazia de Santos (Sindaport), João Andrade, had stated that workers were complaining that there was “no basic security” to avoid contamination. The entity defended itself by pointing out certain initiatives towards this end such as the end of biometric reading to gain access to the port.
The Santos Stevedores’ Union had already informed before the meeting that there was a very real threat that work would be stopped. In a letter, the organization stated that the stevedores intended to cease their activities completely at Santos, limiting themselves to “exceptional work” such as “an urgent need to off-load hospital products and other essential items”.
According to a report published by Valor Econômico newspaper, recently container terminals DP World, BTP and Santos Brasil announced measures to reinforce security. Most of the administrative employees are working from home, but the rest are still working on site, with operations remaining unaffected, according to the companies.
