The Port of Santos had a record cargo throughput of 162.4 million tonnes in 2022. Compared to 2021, this figure reveals a growth of 10.5%. Shipments advanced 15.1%, reaching 118.7 million tonnes, and landings totaled 43.7 million tonnes.
In four years, the accumulated growth was 22%, considering the amount of 133.2 million tons handled in 2018, representing an annual growth of 5.1%. Since 2019, SPA has been breaking successive records, year after year.
Considering the 133.2 million tonnes seen in 2018, the cumulative growth over the past four years was 22%, while the annual increase was 5.1%. SPA has been breaking records year after year since 2019.
Container – In container movement, the Port of Santos reached its record of 5 million TEU (unit equivalent to 1 20-foot container) in the year, which means an increase of 21% in four years and 3.2% compared to 2021 alone. It is worth remembering that the port is approaching its maximum container handling capacity of 5.3 million TEUs/year.
Thus, as per its latest Development and Zoning Plan (PDZ), approved in 2020, SPA held five auctions and kickstarted six other projects to meet the demands of the port. Among these planned projects is the new container terminal, STS 10, which will increase the capacity by 2.3 million TEU/year, eliminating the risk of the port operating at its maximum capacity.
