Next Thursday (14th), at 2:30 PM, the Port of Santos will take a significant step toward sustainability and decarbonization by inauguring a modern Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system at the quay near Warehouse 23. This innovative electrification project will enable up to three tugboats, docked simultaneously, to be powered with clean energy directly from the quay, allowing them to turn off their diesel generators at berth.

A collaboration between the Santos Port Authority (APS), Wilson Sons, and IC Supply, the new system aims to reduce the environmental impact of port operations. It marks a sustainable transformation in tugboat operations. The energy used is 100% renewable, sourced from the Itatinga hydroelectric plant, with the potential to reduce daily CO2 emissions by 8.4 tons, along with 165 kg of nitrogen oxides, 21 kg of sulfur dioxide, and 6 kg of particulate matter.

In addition to the new station, the Port of Santos has an electrification point at the Marinha Quay, which is dedicated to servicing Brazilian Navy vessels.

APS President Anderson Pomini states that “this project positions the Port of Santos at the global forefront of sustainable port initiatives, aligning it with international decarbonization goals and contributing to improved environmental quality and the Port-City relationship.” APS also plans to expand the electrification infrastructure by installing five more panels by the end of 2025.

This initiative reflects the Port of Santos’ commitment to innovation and the development of practices that strengthen sustainability at one of the country’s most important gateways for goods.
