The Santos Port Authority (APS) has commenced studies, in collaboration with the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), to assess the feasibility of deepening the navigation channel of the Port of Santos to 17 meters.
Signed on December 22, the contract between APS and Unicamp focuses on executing coastal protection works studies. “It is a commitment made by the Port Authority to ensure that the works do not affect the beaches in the region,” explained APS President Anderson Pomini. “Deepening the navigation channel is a necessity created by the market to keep the Port of Santos competitive, but it needs to be done while preserving the coast,” commented Pomini.
APS has committed to expanding the coastal protection pilot project implemented by the Municipality of Santos in Ponta da Praia, aiming to propose solutions for recovering Aparecida and Embaré beaches. The APS’s goal is also to understand the necessary efforts for depths of up to 18 meters in the navigation channel.
Hydrodynamic simulations will be conducted to assess the differences in current behavior in the access channel and evaluate their interference with the works to improve the port’s navigation conditions based on bathymetric variation data and dredged volume. The contract outlines a 15-month timeline for the university to present its conclusions.
