Port of Santos: Marimex to transfer operations to new area by 1Q25

Marimex will change the address. After a lease agreement extension for up to 20 years, starting in 2020, the cargo storage area will be transferred to Valongo, an area of a little over 90 thousand square meters, replacing the Valongo Maritime Terminal (Teval). The idea is to have the new Port of Santos space ready and operational by the first quarter of 2025 (1Q25).
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, “the signature of the amendment replacing the area currently occupied by Marimex and extending the period necessary for the amortization of investments – which will still be calculated by the National Agency for Waterway Transport (Antaq) – was determined by the Federal Cort of Accounts (TCU).”
Based on recent adjustments to the port’s polygon area, it was possible to create an alternative site to comply with the decision without interfering with the action of STS53. With the approval of the port’s new Development and Zoning Plan (PDZ in Portuguese), the area occupied by Marimex was destined for fertilizer operations.
As a result, on-site maintenance would conflict with the project to expand the internal railroad (Fips) at the right bank of the Port of Santos, making expanding the terminal unfeasible. When contacted, Marimex declined to comment.
Transition and synergy
The Transition Plan, in which the transference plan is included, foresees several steps dedicated to executive projects, licensing, construction of building facilities, imports, and assembly, in addition to testing the equipment until Marimax’s definitive departure from Outerinhos in the first quarter of 2025.
Director of Business Development and Regulation at Santos Port Authority (SPA), Bruno Stupello, recalls that it was only when the changes to the port’s polygon were approved at the beginning of the year that the inclusion of a new area was rendered possible. This is what made the transfer to Valongo possible.
“The company will install itself near the Saboó container terminals, close to the BTP terminals and the future STS10 terminals, providing synergy in terms of container handling and the flow of trucks,” assesses him.
STS53
The SPA director believes that the negotiations between the Secretary of Ports, the National Agency for Waterway Transport (Antaq), and the Planning and Logistics Company (EPL) for the auction of the STS53 area should gain new speed after the transfer of Marimex. The terminal will have road and rail connections that extend across the Santos region. The forecast is for investments of approximately R$ 659 million.
The national secretary of Ports, Mario Povia, celebrated the resolution of the issue. “I see it as positive, as it removes one of the barriers to leasing STS53.”
