Port of Santos privatization is ‘completely discarded,’ says port authority president

In a recent announcement, Anderson Pomini, the newly appointed president of the Port Authority of Santos (APS), firmly stated that the privatization of the Port of Santos is completely discarded.
Speaking on the matter, Pomini emphasized a global trend, pointing out that prominent international ports, including those in China and Europe, are predominantly managed by public authorities. “The absence of privately managed ports of national interest around the world is not a coincidence. Ports serve as crucial hubs of national security and are integral to public management, which aims to harmonize societal interests with port operations,” Pomini asserted.
Also, Pomini added, “Port management function is to regulate the market, control entry and exit from the country. And it has a social function,” he said.

Regarding the future development plans for the Port of Santos, Pomini mentioned ongoing studies concerning the STS10 container terminal tender, indicating the potential for revision. “The initial plan envisioned a complete vacancy of the area after Ecoporto’s departure to make way for a new terminal that could double our container capacity. However, considering the significant investments made by established companies and the employment they generate, which amounts to around a thousand jobs, there is a dual challenge of meeting the port’s infrastructure needs while ensuring job retention. As a result, a comprehensive study is underway to determine the optimal format that can effectively address both the port’s demands and the need to sustain employment.”
Pomini also highlighted the possibility of exploring additional locations within the port to establish new container terminals, including the left bank and areas currently occupied by stilt houses.
Addressing the existing contract with Ecoporto, owned by Ecorodovias, Pomini revealed that a six-month temporary renewal is under discussion. The agreement is expected to be finalized and signed this week, ensuring continuity in operations while allowing further deliberation on the port’s future direction.
